Irish protest on December 5th

Postby hyke on Tue Dec 01, 2009 8:40 pm

Copied from I2:

If you can turn up, PLEASE support us (I understand Aer Lingus are doing some great deals on transatlantic flights at present? angel )...

...and can somebody PLEASE post this on Wrongplanet for us (still banned, and nobody else has the stomach to join the way things are)?

And, of course, ANYWHERE else you think there may be Irish Aspies, Welsh Aspies who fancy a day trip on the ferry and even International Aspies with private planes.

This will be our first Irish protest, and we are few and scared to death.

“Nothing About Us Without Us”

There will be a rally held outside the Aspire AGM:
Aspire AGM
Date: Saturday 5th December 2009
Time: 10.30 am - 12 pm
Venue: Brunswick Room, Carmichael Centre, North Brunswick St, Dublin 7, Ireland

Aspire, who's stated mission is to "support people with Asperger Syndrome to lead full and independent lives", are failing the very people they claim to assist.

People with Asperger Syndrome are disappointed and disillusioned with them, and insist that the organisation must change.

Asperger Syndrome is largely a social disability that makes it very hard for us to organise and protest. Knowing this, Aspire are literally ruining our lives and our prospects by presuming to define us, and speak for us, without ever bothering to consult with us about who we are, let alone what we want and need to help us live full and productive lives, so we must try and make our voices heard above them.

Aspire represents the interests of adults with Asperger Syndrome at national level. They do so without consulting adults with Asperger Syndrome or allowing them to monitor or challenge the accuracy of what they say, or allowing them to speak on their own behalf.

Membership of Aspire is only open to adults with Asperger Syndrome on condition that they do not express any public criticism of officers of Aspire, and at a price (€70) that is beyond the means of the majority of adults with Asperger Syndrome who have no access to anything like the real help and support they need to approach finding, and sustaining full time employment.

I still have membership of WP (last time I checked) so can post it there.

I'll also notify the London Autistic Rights Movement - I'm not sure if we have any members in Ireland, but someone might know someone who knows someone etc.

EDIT: someone else already posted it to WP, but I'll publicise it via my other networks.
